Can my religious beliefs get me fired?

If you are a non-Christian worker in Fort Lauderdale, you have probably wondered if your religious beliefs could get you fired. The unfortunate answer is that an employer may indeed fire you because of your beliefs. While in most instances, non-Christians are the victims of these situations, Christians who work for employers of other belief systems may be affected, too.

Even though your religious beliefs may get you fired, the truth remains that it is illegal. According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, religious discrimination occurs when an applicant or employee suffers unfavorable treatment due to their religious beliefs. The EOC also takes it a step further to extend the definition to the spouse. So, for instance, if an employer fires you because of your spouse’s religious beliefs, this is also considered religious discrimination.

Protection from religious discrimination does not stop at getting fired, either. Here are other instances where the law prohibits religious discrimination:

  •          Job assignments
  •          Fringe benefits
  •          Promotions
  •          Pay rates
  •          Training
  •          Hiring

Often times, getting fired for your religious beliefs is not a standalone incident. It may follow incidents of harassment at work. This is also illegal under U.S. law. It is important to note, however, that the law may not protect against offhanded comments, simple teasing or one-off incidents.

When the situation becomes so frequent that it creates a hostile and uncomfortable work environment, this is illegal. People who may be considered harassers include not just employees and the employer, but also even a client or customer.

One of America’s greatest strengths has always been its diversity. However, not all employers agree with this. Many may wish to encourage group-think in not just areas of work, but your personal life, as well. Thankfully, there are laws in place that may protect you.

This article provides information on the possibility of getting fired for religious beliefs. It should not be interpreted as legal advice.
